UNMET NEED
Cancer mortality is largely due to metastasis where cells from a tumor spread and invade additional organs. Current techniques in pathology identify cancerous tissue and can in some cases provide qualitative estimates of tumor aggressiveness.  Genetic testing is providing clues to tumor prognosis, but clinical data can be misleading due to large variations in the response of individuals to treatment.
 
Developing personalized precision treatment strategies is difficult because no rapid, quantitative tests are available to evaluate the aggressiveness and metastatic potential of tumors.
 
PROBLEM SOLVED
The inventors have created a simple microfluidic device which evaluates the metastatic propensity of tumor cells.  Cells derived from tumor biopsies are placed in the device and their behavior is observed using novel low cost techniques.  Results obtained overnight have been shown to correlate with tumor aggressiveness and survival expectancy.  The device is capable of isolating aggressive cells for differential treatment as well as the evaluation of the utility of alternative drug substances on the metastatic potential of patient derived tumor cells.
 
STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
The inventors have demonstrated the efficacy and viability of the device on multiple breast cancer lines and patient derived cells.  Work is being expanded to additional solid tumor cancers – both cell lines and patient derived samples.  The prototype device has been built, evaluated and demonstrated.  In addition to expanding testing to other cancers, work is focused on process development and validation.  The inventors are currently receiving federal and university support and funding and plan to commercialize the technology.
