Patient support for cone-beam computed tomography

Unmet Need
Newer imaging systems based on cone-beam CT (CBCT) introduces an additional design criterion for the head holder that has not been previously addressed. This invention results in a radiographic profile that avoids a well-known image artifact (shading and streaks in CBCT images commonly referred to as a “cone-beam artifact”).

Technology Overview
This invention concerns a design of patient head holder that differs from designs commonly used in x-ray computed tomography (CT) to support the patient head’s head during the scan. Conventional head holders are well-suited for CT scanning systems, but not for newer imaging systems based on CBCT.  The new design includes an elongated vertical extent such that its top end is sufficiently far from the top of the head to avoid unwanted artifacts.
