Disclosure Date:

Unmet Need:
Identifying a convenient and safe childcare program with high quality levels is very challenging. There are a wide range of childcare and school-age programs within a short distance from family homes, workplaces or routes of travel. How should parents select which program in their area is appropriate for their children.

Technical Overview:
Faculty members in the Center for Technology and Education at Johns Hopkins University, in conjunction with the Maryland State Department of Education have developed Maryland EXCELS, a voluntary Quality Rating and Improvement System that helps Maryland families identify high quality programs using GPS-enable location services and custom search functionality. This also serves to encourage providers to increase levels of quality and provide parents with information and choices about quality child care.
