C03566: Intra-Operative Ultrasound for Microsurgery

Novelty:

A new visualization tool to perform robust intra-operative evaluations of surgical actions.

Value Proposition:

In the field of microsurgical procedures, such as vitreoretinal surgery, good visualization of the patient’s eye is necessary for effective surgical planning and execution. However, current methods, such as viewing though a surgical lens, can easily be obscured and impact surgical performance. Additionally, this method only allows for visual evaluation of the surgery to predict success. Follow-up studies are needed to confirm success or the need for additional surgery. This technology provides an alternative intra-operative visualization method as well as means to immediately evaluate the quality of a surgery. Other advantages include:

• Signal is tuned to acquire detailed images
• Provides depth-related information
• Simple hand operation

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed an ultrasound transducer for use in microsurgical applications. In the case of retinal surgery, it is inserted into the eye just prior to surgery to obtain images through the various tissues of the eye. This provides detail about retinal tears that cannot be obtained through visual inspection alone, thus allowing for better planning of surgeries. It can be used throughout and immediately after the surgery to confirm the procedure’s effect and whether rework is required. This enhanced visualization technique not only results in more effective and successful procedures but also helps to eliminate the risks and discomfort associated with repeated surgeries.

Looking for Partners:

To develop and commercialize the technology as a new visualization device in the fields of general micro or Vitreoretinal Surgery markets.
