C04504: Daily Goal Form for Improved ICU Patient Care

Novelty:

A healthcare management tool to improve communication and clarify daily goals for patient care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Value Proposition:

Patient care rounds in the ICU are usually more clinician-centric, lacking clarity about tasks and care plans for the day. This invention is a goal sheet that enables the staff to list down daily goals in the treatment plan aiding in better organization of their work and effective communication with other healthcare providers. Additional advantages include:

• Reduction in Length of Stay (LOS) time in the ICU for patients
• Increase patient safety and treatment quality
• Interdisciplinary communication tool
• Effective use of resources
• Help in communication with patient families
• Potential to develop an electronic version of the system

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a daily goal form to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of communication during patient care rounds in the ICU. During the two rounds every day, the ICU caregiver team visits each patient for about 20-25 minutes to assess and plan appropriate treatment goals. This questionnaire asks the care team a series of questions to help them create explicit measurable goals for the day enabling tracking of daily tasks and effective communication. As a result of efficient patient care, this decreases average LOS for patients in the ICU. Preliminary results using the form show that 95% of the residents and nurses understood their tasks better leading to a 50% decrease in LOS for patients in the ICU. Potential use of the form can be extended to all of healthcare.

Looking for Partners:
