C05005: Novel Class and Clinical Application of Antithrombotic Agents that Specifically Inhibit Inflammation-related Vascular Occlusion

Technical Details:

Inflammation is known to be an integral part of the vascular occlusive events that occur during heart attack and stroke, although the specific pathway that links inflammation to clot formation has not previously been determined. Using both in vitro and in vivo studies, JHU researchers have identified the specific components through which inflammation promotes clot formation. In addition, this inflammatory component of thrombus formation cannot be prevented by standard anti-thrombotic therapy. Inhibitors specific to this inflammatory component of thrombus formation decrease clot formation both in vitro and in vivo.

Looking for Partners:

Previously there were no therapies available for treating the inflammation-related component vessel occlusion because the specific inflammatory factors that contributed to clot formation to were not known. The identification of the pathway that links inflammation to clot formation potentially provides a new class of highly specific anti-thrombotic agents for treating inflammation-induced vascular occlusive diseases.
