C09893: Latex Allergy Skin Testing Reagents

Novelty:

Three specific and sensitive skin testing reagents for latex allergy diagnosis.

Value Proposition:

Skin tests being the preferred diagnostic choice for the evaluation of allergic diseases, there is an absence of a well-characterized natural rubber latex skin test reagent for routine diagnosis. Therefore, this invention identifies three skin testing reagents that can accurately differentiate between individuals with and without latex allergy. Other advantages include:

• Provide specific and sensitive diagnostic results
• Biologically safe and sterile reagents

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have identified nonammoniated latex, ammoniated latex and rubber glove extracts as sources of natural rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) to accurately diagnose latex allergy. A large population of subjects with and without latex allergy, identified by clinical history, was chosen for the study. All of them provided blood and then received puncture skin tests and intradermal skin tests with the three reagents by use of sequential titration. A glove provocation test and IgE anti-latex RAST were also used to clarify positive history-negative skin test response and negative history-positive skin test response mismatches. The results confirmed equivalent diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for all three skin test reagents after normalization for total protein.
