C11019: Mountable “On-Board” Surgical Navigation and Tracking SystemNovelty:
A novel surgical navigation and tracking system attained by mounting a surgical tracker device onto the body of an existing imaging system.
Value Proposition:
In present image-based navigation surgery, the tracker device is placed in a fixed position in the operating room and tracks the position of surgical tools, the patient, and the imaging-device with respect to the room coordinate system. Due to the limited mobility of this system surgeons experience lack of field-of-view, tracking accuracy, line-of-sight, and workflow. The present invention provides a mountable “On-Board” image-based surgical navigation and tracking system that can be attached to existing imaging systems or C-arm to track the operating room environment.
• Improves line-of-sight and field of view of the tracker.
• Improves accuracy and provides flexibility in navigation.
• The tracker system is smaller than current trackers and can be mounted on existing imaging system or C-arm.
Technical Details:
Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a novel surgical navigation system attained by mounting a surgical tracker device onto the body of an existing imaging system (C-arm). The system is distinct from conventional approaches to surgical navigation in which the tracker is mounted somewhere within the room. In the proposed system, the minimum tracker markers needed are only the patient reference marker and the surgical tool. Therefore, the field of measurement of the tracker can be made narrower which promises to increase tracking accuracy. Furthermore, when the video-based tracker is used, the field of view is able to be visualized overlaid onto the video image in real-time. Consequently, the setup time should be significantly reduced and at the same time, the amount of X-ray exposure during this targeting process should be also reduced.
