C11421: A Novel 3D Pre-clinical Imaging Software

Novelty:

A novel 3-D pre-clinical imaging software which uses re-slicing of different modalities to improve medical imaging registration.

Value Proposition:

Currently pre-clinical imaging is processed in 2D images which are crucial to the researcher in observing changes, either at the organ, tissue, cell, or molecular level. Image registration is the process of finding a transformation that aligns one image to another. The importance of medical image registration is due in part to the many clinical applications including diagnosis and surgical planning and to the need for registration across different imaging modalities such as MRI, X-RAY, CT and PET. Technology has several advantages over currently used methods including 3D re-slicing of different modalities to match field of view, slice location, slice thickness, and image size. In addition:

• The optimization of the imaging process is more cost effective.
• 3D re-slicing to correct displacement, rotation, and tilt of modalities.
• 3D slice by slice angular or radial re-slicing to deform or warp and maximize similarity between the target and reference image.

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a novel re-slicing-based non-rigid 3D registration of radiological images. Registration is performed by searching for a re-slicing angle and re-slicing plane that maximizes similarity between the reference image volume and the re-sliced target image volume. The estimated re-slicing angles could be between 0 and 360 degrees. This invention can improve molecular visualization techniques in high-frequency micro-ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are usually used for imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Within the broad area of research, medical image registration has emerged as an active field and is becoming a valuable tool for various medical image processing applications.

Looking for Partners:

To develop and commercialize the technology as a 3D imaging registration across different imaging modalities such as MRI, X-RAY, CT, and PET.

Stage of Development:

Proof of Concept

Data Availability:

Method was validated by applying to multi-parametric MRI, PET and CT images of the breast, prostate and whole body.
