C11945: Automatically-Deflating Air Postpartum Tamponade (ADAPT)

Novelty:

ADAPT is the first air-inflated tamponade which applies a pressure greater than the woman’s blood pressure to the birth canal and uterine sinuses to cease blood flow.

Value Proposition:

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. The ADAPT increases time for transportation to a higher care facility so treatment can be administered. The pressure and compression mechanisms utilized to stop blood flow and compress the uterine sinuses are the same as those traditionally employed to stop external lacerations. This is a passive system and does not require additional user input. The ADAPT incorporates the safety and performance of devices used in the developed world, at costs feasible for low-resource settings. Other advantages are:

• Facilitates easy positioning of the device in relation to the anatomy .
• Eliminates the current techniques of the need for vaginal packing using gauze .

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers are developing a method for quick cessation of blood loss to manage postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in resource-constrained settings. They have developed the Automatically-Deflating Air Postpartum Tamponade (ADAPT). The ADAPT is equipped with a custom designed balloon which is inserted into the uterus and inflated to provide uniform pressure along the walls of the uterus and vagina. Additionally, the ADAPT has a system for automatic air release. This is required to allow the uterus to contract to its normal postpartum state while still maintaining pressure against the uterine walls. The ADAPT will be provided sterile in order to support infection prevention efforts.

Looking for Partners:

To develop and commercialize the technology as a medical device to prevent blood loss for women experiencing postpartum hemorrhaging.

Stage of Development:

Pre-Clinical

Data Availability:

Animal studies are ongoing, with promising initial results. Human trials will begin by mid-2013 to prove the effectiveness of the ADAPT in resource-constrained settings.
