C12046: Indicator of Overall Heart Health

Novelty:

This invention helps quantify overall heart health by assigning an index to left ventricle performance.

Value Proposition:

Current predictors and diagnostics of heart failure and future heart health include such metrics as blood pressure and low-density/high-density lipoprotein (LDL/HDL) concentration. This new invention, the Strain Relaxation Index (SRI), instead uses cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data to more accurately indicate heart health in general and diastolic function in particular. Other advantages include:

• Adaptable with modalities other than cardiac MRI .
• Compares with standard diastolic parameters from echocardiography .
• Highly descriptive of left ventricle performance .

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a scale which can be used to evaluate diastolic performance, and by extension, heart health in general. The SRI is calculated through cardiac MRI-based strain and strain-rate curves of the left ventricle. Other modalities may also be used, as long as there is sufficient temporal resolution. Researchers have shown that the SRI is an accurate predictor of heart failure as well as atrial fibrillation.

Looking for Partners:

To develop and commercialize the technology as a novel indicator of heart health and as a method to determine patient suitability for cardiac implants.
