Motion-insensitive, Projection-based MRI Endoscopy Method

Case ID:
C12175

C12175: Motion Insensitive MRI Endoscopy

Novelty:

This technology enables MRI endoscopy to capture clear images despite any patient/endoscope movement.

Value Proposition:

Patient movement during traditional MRI can dramatically decrease the quality of the resulting images. MRI endoscopy adds yet another moving part. This invention facilitates the use of MRI endoscopy by reducing its sensitivity to movement. This novel technology reduces the amount of time required to take one image from 0.5 seconds to up to 2 milliseconds, which lowers the dependence of image quality on patient/endoscope movement. Other advantages of this technology include:

• Demonstrated effectiveness in cardiac and cranial environments
• Image reconstruction can be achieved through many different algorithms
• Invention is suitable for use between 1-7 Tesla

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a new method of MRI endoscopy that renders this imaging modality motion-insensitive. The invention relates to methods of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) endoscopy wherein active internal detectors and projection based MRI methods are employed. In the invention, the deleterious effects of subject and/or probe movement are significantly decreased by the detection of properties that are intrinsic to the detector’s sensitivity profile. The information is used to shift the projection on a frame-by-frame basis to the center of the field-of-view (FOV) of the endoscopic image and/or to an endoscopic cine image stream. Use of a sliding acquisition window enables image updates at the frame-rate of the individual projections. This invention features a high scan rate, allowing the MRI to take images up to 250 times faster than traditional MRI.

Looking for Partners:

To develop and commercialize the technology as the new standard for conducting MRI endoscopy.
