Methods to Accelerate Healing of Injured Tissues via Stem Cells in Nanofiber Patches

Case ID:

C12353: Stem Cell Developed Patches for Accelerated Angiogenesis

Novelty:

This technology describes compositions and methods of use of certain patches, with infused stem cells and/or derived growth factors, used for accelerated healing of tissue injuries.

Value Proposition:

Existing therapeutic angiogenesis techniques that employ individual growth factors and other stem cell delivery methods to tissue injuries are non-optimal due to unknown factors associated with the correct sequence, concentration and combination of injecting the growth factors and stem cells. This technology exploits the potential of stem cells to recognize the local environment and produce growth factors that can activate endogenous repair as per the needs of the tissue injury. Also, since stem cells or stem cell growth factors are being incorporated into nanofiber patches, they can:

• Be shielded from immune attacks and complete wash-outs due to strong binding to the nanofiber meshwork
• Be easily used in a number of settings with implantable devices and stents to promote angiogenesis and tissue regeneration
• Harness an array of growth factors into portable nanofiber patches that can be carried and by soldiers during wars and can be used as band-aids for immediate relief

Technical Details:

Johns Hopkins researchers have identified a method by which stem cells and/or stem cell growth factor products can be harnessed within nanofiber patches. These patches can be made up of biodegradable or non-biodegradable products using the electro-spinning process, following which stem cells or stem cell growth factor products can be seeded in the patches. These can then be used in a variety of settings for accelerated angiogenesis by the stem cell mediated release of favorable growth factors that promote angiogenesis and tissue regeneration. These can also be combined with implantable devices and stents for postoperative wound healing and enhanced repair of cardiac muscles.
