Novel Fluoride Prenatal Dietary Supplement

Case ID:
C13553
Disclosure Date:
4/14/2015
INVENTION NOVELTY
JHU researchers have developed a novel prenatal dietary supplement containing 3 mg of fluoride and a unique composition of a prenatal vitamin.

VALUE PROPOSITION
Although the Institute of Medicine has indicated 3mg of fluoride as adequate intake for pregnant women since 1997, there is no existing prenatal vitamin on the market with this dose of fluoride. In fact, prenatal vitamins do not contain fluoride at all. Fluoride is an important nutrition supplement that may affect dentition as well as immediately impact maternal health and, through its effects on microbiome, may decrease adverse perinatal outcomes. JHU researchers have proposed a novel unique composition of a prenatal vitamin in tablet form, containing 3mg fluoride that may have a beneficial effect on the natural microbiome of the maternal oral cavity and genital tract during pregnancy, capable of protecting against transient bacteremia and ascending infection, respectively, which are known antecedents to both prematurity and preterm premature rupture of membranes.

TECHNICAL DETAILS
JHU researchers propose a novel supplement containing 3mg fluoride and a unique composition of a prenatal vitamin in tablet form as well as unique indications for administration. Pregnant women will be advised to take one table per day beginning in the second trimester of pregnancy until delivery. It should be taken on an empty stomach at nighttime with plenty of water.
