Novel Hook and Catheter Designs for Gastrointestinal Perforation Closure

Case ID:

INVENTION NOVELTY

This technology is a new device that allows for acquiring tissue and foreign bodies or closing openings in bodily tissue.

VALUE PROPOSTITION

Perforation is a potentially serious complication of diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. Closure of any perforation endoscopically is preferable to avoid surgical intervention which requires abdominal incision with its associated morbidity and mortality. Available endoscopic closure devices such as endoclips and endoscopic suturing do not reliably allow full-thickness closure because the serosal layers of the gastrointestinal wall are not reliably grasped into the jaws of endoclips  A need remains for a device which will easily facilitate full-thickness endoscopic closures. Advantages of the present invention compared to current endoscopic closure devices include:

•Better ease-of-use due to lack of need for precise placement of device
•Device customization allowing for repair of small or large perforations
•Better closure efficacy in natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgeries
•Additional clinical applications using catheter-delivered tissue and foreign body acquisition design

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a prototype of a new closure device that utilizes hook-shaped tips to facilitate closure of a bodily opening or acquire tissue or foreign bodies in luminal tissue. The closure device can be delivered via catheter or scope device and deployed into the target bodily opening or towards the target object or tissue for acquisition. This invention will be of particular use in acquisition of objects or tissue in a luminal cavity or organ surface and will facilitate closure of bodily openings in cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and reproductive system applications.
