Treatment of Acute Liver Injury and Hepatic Failure by Mobilization of Bone Marrow Derived Stem Cells

Acute Liver Failure (ALF), typically due to drug poisoning or viral hepatitis, accounts for around 10,000 deaths per year in the United States. Treatment options are severely limited: supportive observation in the hopes of spontaneous recovery or liver transplant. Liver transplant is an imperfect solution for these patients with extraordinary resource utilization and inferior outcomes. Medical treatments to improve rates of spontaneous recovery are badly needed. It is known that under some circumstances bone marrow derived hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) can participate in migration to the liver and regeneration of parenchyma. Methods to mobilize HSCs have been developed in other clinical scenarios. Here the inventors report that mobilization of HSCs is life saving in an accepted model of animal Acute Liver Failure. In one aspect, the present invention provides methods of treating a subject with acute liver injury comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of at least one stem cell mobilizer. Utilizing this protocol in humans with acute liver failure or perhaps any degree of liver injury may prove profoundly beneficial.
