A Mouse Monoclonal Antibody Against Human LINE-1 ORF1p

Case ID:
C12335
Disclosure Date:
2/4/2013
Invention Novelty:
Johns Hopkins researchers have developed a monoclonal antibody against the cancer-associated protein LINE-1 ORF1p.

Technical Overview:
There is great unmet need for a method of easily and broadly screening for cancer. Biomarkers, one of the major tools used in cancer screening, are usually specific for one cancer type, making testing for a host of biomarkers unwieldy and impractical.

The inventors have found that LINE-1 ORF1p expression is associated with a number of cancers including lymphoma and colon, renal cell, hepatocellular, lung, breast, pancreatic, and biliary tract carcinomas. The inventors have developed a monoclonal antibody that recognizes LINE-1 ORF1p, allowing for easy and broad detection of cancer. This antibody recognizing a sequence corresponding to amino acids 35 to 44 of human LINE-1 ORF1p (MENDFDELRE). Human LINE-1 is a transposable element activated in many human malignancies.
