Hyaluronic Acid Binding Polymer System Transforms Tissue and Biomaterial Surfaces
Case ID:

We introduce a transformational biomaterial approach to engineering lubrication at the tissue surface that can be applied in a single application. Articular cartilage explants were modified with a synthetic peptide-polymer system designed to non-covalently bind HA to the tissue surface and work synergistically with HA in the local fluid environment. Lubrication properties of chemically-modified tissue surfaces with bound HA were similar to those of native tissue bathed in HA lubricant. Biomaterials-mediated strategies that locally concentrate HA and create a self-healing coating of biological lubricant on tissue surfaces provide physical and biological benefits to treat tissue-lubricating dysfunction.
