Molecular optical imaging, including both bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging, is an important modality for pre-clinical research. At present, all molecular optical imaging systems operates as stand-alone systems. It would be very powerful to integrate the operation of a molecular optical imaging system with other pre-clinical research systems to provide complementary molecular information. Our invention pertains to a dual-use optical tomographic imaging system that can operate for efficient stand-alone applications, and can also be docked robotically on-board another imaging or irradiation instrument for combined operation.
