Topology Optimization Software for Linear Elastic Continuum Solid Mechanics

Case ID:
C13410
Disclosure Date:
1/25/2015
The problem this Topological Optimization Software seeks to address is a problem which humanity has grappled with ever since our ancestors began to make tools - design optimization. This goes beyond the mere shape of an item but can also include what materials the item will be made out of. This optimization process is known as topology. The Topological Optimization Software is specifically related to the SIMP branch of topology. The SIMP process seeks to design a shape from the the ground up by iteration. This also allowed scientists to take into account material strength when designing an object. The inherent drawback of traditional SIMP construction is that the shape is a "slave" to the topological mesh used to create the object. The algorithms of the Topological Optimization Software improve upon this method by breaking the bond of the mesh. The design program and algorithms is integrated with a 3D printing software suite which allows either a Laser Sintering or Selective Laser Melting printing machine to assemble said object. It is also able to use multiple powder based printing materials.
