Radiology Peer Review Application

Case ID:
C12805
Unmet Need
Diagnostic errors affect at least 1 in 20 U.S. adults. Between 2000 and 2002, 575,000 deaths were caused by medical error. Variability and errors between radiologists can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. To mitigate the damages, radiological peer reviews are essential to improve diagnostic accuracy. Existing peer reviews often require extensive paperwork that may hinder productivity. Despite adherence to the Joint Commission requirements, there are still 5.08% outpatient diagnostic errors, affecting approximately 12 million adults each year. Thus, there is a need for effective peer reviews to reduce diagnostic errors and increase patient mortality.

Technology Overview
The proposed technology offers multiple methods of participating in peer review: rereading relevant cases, random sampling, submitting discrepancy reports, tough case reporting, and difficult case selecting for a multidisciplinary conference review. This system allows radiologists to concur or disagree with previous findings from within their existing workflow. If two reviewers disagree, the case is adjudicated by the section chief. This application aims to facilitate the review process and improve patient care. The Radiological Peer Review is a tool that has flexible submissions scenarios and is patient context-aware.

Stage of Development
The Peer Review software is available through the Radiology Web Desktop. This technology synchs with Rad Assistant EMR aggregator and Context Management Software. For full functionality, Peer Review must run on the Web Desktop that requires Google Chrome version 24.
