Unmet Need
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, accounting for half of blindness cases and affecting about 20 million people. While cataract surgery is an effective procedure for restoring vision with a high success rate, it is a somewhat difficult procedure. Thus, there may be a need for improved surgical tools that make the procedure safer, easier, and faster.

Technology Overview
The inventors have developed a unique design for an irrigation aspiration instrument tip to be used for aspiration of cortical lens material during cataract surgery. Their ‘hammerhead’ shaped tip houses multiple aspiration ports that can remove cortical material, an improvement over current irrigation/aspiration hand pieces that only have 1 aspiration port. The curved design contours to the natural shape of the lens capsule, allowing improved maneuverability.
