New Therapeutic Approach for the Treatment of Neuropathic Pain

Case ID:
C15852

Unmet Need

Chronic pain affects around 50-million adults within the United States (see CDC). Currently the dominant treatment option for moderate to severe pain are opioids, which have a range of associated adverse effects as well as the potential for abuse. Despite the development of abuse-deterrent formulations, opioid dependence remains a major challenge. The synthesis of new molecules that avoid opioid receptors yet provide equal analgesic effects could replace the potential for abuse and provide the medical field with new options for pain treatment. Therefore, there remains a need for the development of a novel small molecule drug that may offer a non-addictive treatment for pain.

Technology Overview

Johns Hopkins researchers have identified a central nervous system penetrant small molecule agonist for the treatment of neuropathic pain. The small molecule may effectively attenuate evoked persistent, and spontaneous pain without causing opioid-like side effects and abuse potential. The therapeutic target of the molecule is specifically expressed in DRG neurons, eliminating the possibility of off-site related side effects seen in opioid-based analgesics.

Stage of Development

CNS-penetrant lead molecule has been identified. Further structural optimization will be required prior to selecting a clinical candidate.
